What’s in it for you?
The major benefit of being a representative is that you can improve School life for yourself and those you represent. In addition, you will gain some valuable skills and experience:
Communication skills
You’ll learn a lot about putting your point across effectively. You’ll also learn the importance of effective listening in order to gain the fullest picture of a situation.
Networking skills
Representatives make many contacts that can be extremely useful in both a representative and personal capacity.
Organisational and time management skills
You will need to develop effective time management and organisational skills to make sure you can fit in your work and your commitments as a student representative.
Sense of achievement and satisfaction
Knowing you have made a positive change is extremely rewarding
Being a representative is broadly about being a voice for students:
- identifying what works well,
- liaising on problems and improvements,
- and reporting back to students
- assisting the School in highlighting student feedback opportunities to your fellow students
As a Rep you are a:
Point of Contact,
Opinion Researcher,
Policy Shaper,
Action Taker.
The main focus for this is through your role on committees. LIS has the following committees with student representation:

- Academic Council,
- Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committee,
- Policy and Regulatory Committee.
How can I become a student rep?
Nominations are requested from the student community each year. Where more than one nominee for a position comes forward there is an election. Nominees are typically asked to provide a short video to let people know why they would be a good student rep.
